The Health Consequences of Alcohol
Success Story:
A man of Portuguese descent with Alcohol Use Disorder enrolled in OAR three weeks after his last drink in 9/2019. He grew up around alcohol and began drinking at 13 years old. He states he had an alcohol problem by his late teens. He had many negative consequences from his drinking including getting fired from 3 jobs and losing his driver’s license. The summer prior to enrolling in OAR, he was drinking as much as a box of wine or 18 beers per day. He had experienced childhood trauma and suffered from uncontrolled depression and anxiety. He was also having cravings to drink alcohol.
After a trial of oral naltrexone, he was started on monthly Vivitrol injections in 10/2019 with a resolution of his alcohol cravings. He has remained sober ever since. Previously his longest sobriety had been 6 months. His depression and anxiety are in remission after counseling and medications provided at OAR. He passed his real estate exam and recently closed on his first two properties. Over the past two years, he has traveled within the US, Canada, and Portugal where he occasionally drinks mocktails or non-alcoholic beer without ever relapsing.

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week®, or NDAFW, is an annual, week-long, health observance that inspires dialogue about the science of drug use and addiction among youth. It provides an opportunity to bring together scientists, students, educators, healthcare providers, and community partners to help advance the science and address youth drug and alcohol use in communities and nationwide. It was launched in 2010 by scientists at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to stimulate educational events in communities so teens can learn what science has taught us about drug use and addiction.
You don’t need to do it alone…we are here to help you on your journey to recovery.
