Success Story:
An African American man in his early 30s self-referred after hearing about the OAR program from “friends on the street”. He first tried Percocet in 2015 for recreational purposes with use quickly escalating. After 2 to 3 months, he switched to heroin since it was less expensive. He sniffed heroin from 2015 to 2019 and his use increased so that he was spending between $100 and $130 EVERY DAY on heroin. Out of fear of overdosing on Fentanyl, he weaned himself down on heroin in 2019. Upon enrolling in OAR he stated, “I am prioritizing my 4 year old daughter’s needs. I must save money. I also quit smoking cigarettes for the same reason”. He remains stable on Suboxone 8 mg daily while working to support his family and spends quality time with his daughter and her mother as much as possible.
National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week®, or NDAFW, is an annual, week-long, health observance that inspires dialogue about the science of drug use and addiction among youth. It provides an opportunity to bring together scientists, students, educators, healthcare providers, and community partners to help advance the science and address youth drug and alcohol use in communities and nationwide. It was launched in 2010 by scientists at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to stimulate educational events in communities so teens can learn what science has taught us about drug use and addiction.
